Flotation

Flotation is the separation of suspended solids from a liquid. Very fine air bubbles are produced which deposit on the solids and carry them to the water surface. The flotation processes shows many advantages versus sedimentation due to its high separation capacity and continual build-up concentration.

Application Options

The use of flotation is recommended when if solids with bad sedimentation properties are found in the wastewater. To achieve a separation of wastewaters from dissolved solids it is necessary to achieve flocculation resp. destabilization by adding chemicals. Generally: it is valid when: the smaller and more hydrophilic the particles are, the smaller the air bubbles must be. The efficiency of the flotation essentially depends on the size of the air bubbles and their extremely fine distribution in the water.

Superior Results

In long experimental series we have achieve an very consistent and fine air distribution in the water and wastewater, which defines the outstanding effects of STULZ-PLANAQUA flotation facilities.

Technical Details

The wastewater is delivered from a buffer basin to the flocculation chamber. Here, depending on the wastewater composition, different chemicals are added and mixed intensively with the wastewater through agitators prior to the entering the actual flotation. In this section the so-called dispersion flow is added under special conditions.

Flotation Cakes

Small air bubbles occurring from tension-release of air-saturated dispersion stream are deposited to solids and carry them to the water surface. The forming flotation cake is removed by devices and transported to a sludge collecting container. The flotate may require separate post-treatment.

Dispersion Stream Treatment

The effluent clarified water, free of solids, proceeds via an installed weir to the effluent chamber. A part of this stream is taken from the effluent chamber to with a pump to a pressure tank and saturated with oxygen under pressure of 5bar. This dispersion stream which amounts from 25 % to 200 % of the raw water – is fed to the inlet chamber and decompressed, in which air is released in form of very fine air bubbles for their intended task.

Construction

Flotation containers, pumps, etc. and the EMSR technology are accommodated in a switch cabinet. Components, such as storage, feed containers and flotation drain are set up. The facilities can also be delivered without a switch cabinet and installed in available spaces.
